There was a version of me who had all the time in the world. Sometimes I think about missing your old self feels like this — missing a version of you that you did not even fully appreciate while she was there.
She didn’t know it, of course. She probably thought she was bored. She would curl up in bed with a book, move to the desk to game for a while, then end up on the floor writing in her journal for no reason. No schedule. No guilt. Just her and her room and whatever she felt like doing that day.
I miss her.

My Room Was My Whole World
Before I got married, my room was everything. Four corners, one girl, and a whole lot of quiet.
I read a lot back then. Not because I had to, just because I wanted to. I would start a book in the morning and still be reading when the light changed. I played online games the same way, hours disappearing without me even noticing. And writing, I wrote a lot too. Nothing important. Just thoughts going somewhere.
What I remember most is that all of it felt weightless. Time didn’t feel like something I had to manage. It just moved, and I moved with it.

Free Time Isn’t the Same Anymore
Here is the strange thing. I still have free time now. Quite a lot of it, actually.
But somewhere along the way, free time stopped feeling the same. It used to mean being alone with myself, fully alone, in the good and quiet way. Now free time usually means being around other people, which I love, but it is a different kind of rest.
ME time is hard to find now. That specific kind of alone where you are not performing, not needed, not thinking about anyone else. Just you and a book or a screen or a notebook and nothing else asking for your attention.
I did not realize how much I needed that until it became something I had to look for.
Missing Your Old Self (And Other Quiet Grief)
Missing your old self does not mean you are unhappy with your life now. I want to be clear about that. Marriage and the life that came with it brought things I would not trade. But grief does not always mean something is wrong. Sometimes you can love where you are and still miss where you were.
That girl in her room, the one who read until her eyes got tired and wrote things nobody ever read, she had something I did not think to hold onto. Not because anyone took it from me. Just because life filled up the space where she used to be.
Maybe Someday
I think about going back to some of it sometimes. Picking up a book the way I used to. Sitting down to write with no purpose. Playing a game just because I feel like it, not to unwind after work but just to play.
Maybe someday when life slows down a little. Or maybe I do not have to wait for that. Maybe ME time is something I need to find again even inside a full life.
I am still figuring that out.
But at least I remember her now. The girl who had more time than she realized, spending it quietly in four corners of a room.
That counts for something.
